5-day water crisis in Bardez eases as supply restored

Supply has almost returned to normal: PWD official

MAPUSA

After five days of severe water scarcity, the situation in Mapusa and other parts of Bardez is gradually returning to normal.

Public Works Department (PWD) officials worked round the clock to restore water supply to affected areas, following disruptions caused by a breach in the Tillari canal.

The crisis began last Friday when a breach in the Tillari canal on the Maharashtra side halted raw water supply to the Assonora water treatment plant.

While authorities attempted to compensate by sourcing water from Amthane dam, an unexpected technical failure prevented the dam’s gate from opening, exacerbating the situation.

A senior PWD engineer confirmed that steady water supply resumed on Wednesday after the dam’s gate was successfully opened.

"We have been closely monitoring the situation for the past two days, working late into the night to ensure that residents receive water. As of today, supply has almost returned to normal," the official said.

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra government has expedited repairs on the breached Tillari canal.

Sources in the Water Resources Department indicated that restoration work is expected to be completed within three days, after which water supply from Tillari to Goa will resume.

Residents and businesses in Bardez, particularly in Mapusa, have heaved a sigh of relief as the crisis shows signs of resolution.
