With the kicking off high tourism season in the State, the touts are back in business.
Taking a tough stand against the menace, Calangute Police conducted a drive and arrested 16 touts on Wednesday.
All the accused were issued a fine totalling Rs 80,000.
The accused were arrested for contravening the provisions of the Tourist Trade Act, 1982 and booked under Section 26 of Act.
Calangute Police informed that the persons who were from outside Goa were found touting for various tourist related activities.“We have been receiving many complaints against the touts who offer illegal services to tourists and cheat them in the bargain,” a senior police officer said.
They were produced before the Directorate of Tourism, Panaji which imposed a total of Rs 80,000 fine on them.
Calangute Police had conducted similar drives against the tout menace in the past and arrested several of them.
Calangute PI Paresh Naik had then informed that a detailed data of the touts was being compiled so that strict action can be taken against repeat offenders.
