Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Monday reaffirmed the government’s commitment to constructing the proposed Unity Mall at Chimbel, even as local residents continue to oppose the project.
Sawant said the project, which is being developed on government-owned land, has already secured all necessary approvals.
“We have taken care of the biodiversity. These projects will generate over 1,000 jobs and give a boost to the local economy. People should not oppose just for the sake of opposition,” the Chief Minister said.
He added that the initiatives enjoy wider support, particularly for their potential to create employment opportunities and stimulate economic activity in the region.
The CM’s remarks came a day after residents of Chimbel staged a protest against the proposed Unity Mall, raising concerns over environmental impact and questioning the need for the project.
Protesters demanded that the land be used instead for community-centric facilities such as schools, health centres, and open spaces.
Despite the opposition, the State government appears determined to push ahead with both the Unity Mall and the Prashasan Stamb administrative building, projecting them as key infrastructure projects for Goa’s growth.
