Commotion at gram sabha as Sarpanch takes offence to member's remark

The Betalbatim gram sabha witnessed commotion and uproar on Sunday prompting the police to intervene to restore order at the meeting.

Trouble started when Sarpanch Anthony Fernandes took offence to what he termed as a personal remark made by a gram sabha member directed at him.

In a fit of anger, the Sarpanch got down from the dais and headed towards the member throwing the meeting into a pandemonium.

The police intervened to restore order as other members were seen in a verbal duel with each other.

The Sarpanch later told the media that he got down from his chair to question the gram sabha member. He, however, hastened to add that he did not even come close to the gram sabha member.

Speaking about the resolution adopted at the meeting, tte Sarpanch said that the panchayat has decided to start door-to-door wet and dry waste collection.

He said the gram sabha has also resolved to levy fee of Rs 200 on picnic groups as garbage collection.
