Demand for site inspection at Cutbona jetty

MARGAO
Expressing concern about the health and sanitation issues prevalent at the Cutbona fishing jetty and its surroundings with dengue raising its ugly head at the jetty, GOACAN has called for an immediate site inspection of the premises to take stock of the health and sanitation issues and prevent the further spread of vector-borne diseases.

In a letter to the Balli primary health officer, GOACAN recalled that the NGO had made requests to the authorities, including a request for the removal of unused nets and abandoned trawlers as well as the provision of additional toilets, proper waste management and the prevention of untreated sewage from entering River Sal.

“We seek your urgent intervention in the form of a site inspection of the Cutbona jetty and its surroundings by involving the concerned stakeholders so as to take stock of the sanitation issues prevalent and put in place measures to prevent the further spread of vector-borne diseases in the area."

GOACAN Coordinator Roland Martins also wrote to the Sub-Divisional Officer-I (Salcete), underscoring the importance of holding a joint meeting with all stakeholders to check what steps have been put in place by the Directorate of Fisheries to prevent the spread of vector-borne diseases.

“It is also important to verify whether the Cutbona Jetty Management Committee has had its regular meetings and whether a Nodal Officer has been appointed to oversee any action plan suggested by the Primary Health Centre Balli. Please ensure that all concerned stakeholders including the Boat Owners Associations are informed of the date & time of the joint meeting so that they may be present and take the appropriate decisions that may be required," the letter added.
