Minister for Tourism and Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte has requested the Public Works Department (PWD) to devise a solution to minimize disruptions during the two-and-a-half-year work of the Porvorim elevated corridor.
Addressing a press conference after a review meeting on Saturday, the minister stated that the impact on vehicular traffic and public life should be minimal.
“We welcome the flyover project, but at the same time, we should know that being the only route connecting Panaji it’s crucial to resolve the connectivity issues. What are the plans for alternative roads? Continuous coordination between all relevant departments is essential,” Khaunte said.
He further emphasized the need for the PWD Chief Engineer to consider Goa’s heavy traffic, especially during tourist season while planning interim solutions. With another review meeting scheduled in the next 8-10 days, Khaunte will also meet Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to ensure an immediate solution.
“We are pleased with the long-term plan the flyover will bring but immediate issues need solutions. Effective traffic management will require strong coordination,” Khaunte added. On Friday, he had stated that the works would commence only after taking into confidence all the stakeholders.
Earlier, the minister had alleged the contractor started the work without a proper presentation to the government and no proper traffic management plan. He recalled having repeatedly stressed at meetings that no work on the elevated corridor should begin without making arrangements for alternate roads.
