Even as a team of officials descended at Colva beach descended on Tuesday for an inspection of the violations pertaining to bore wells, septic tanks etc, the world class beach is believed to have been visited by a stranger “ sea turtle.
In fact, a forest team headed by Range Forest Officer, Marine Rajesh Naik descended at Colva to verify reports that a sea turtle has laid eggs on the world class beach last night. While the team could not find the turtle eggs, the RFO said the remains at the pit reveals that the turtle might have laid eggs on the beach.
While the forest team was verifying reports with a group of fishermen how the eggs laid by the turtle went missing, forest officials appeared upbeat that Colva may emerge as the sea turtle nesting site along Salcete coastal belt.
In fact, the RFO Marine pointed out that they have now drawn up plans amongst the local fishermen community on turtle egg nesting and how to protect the eggs laid by turtles. "Though we could not lay our hands on the eggs, inspection of the pit shows that the turtle must have laid eggs. We will soon embark on an exercise to hold an awareness programme for the fishermen to keep the forest officials in the loop whenever they come across turtle eggs”, he said.
He further pointed out that the forest officials will maintain vigil along the Colva beach to ensure that the turtles gets a nesting site at the world c
