A second incident of mass fish deaths has been reported in the Gawliwada nallah at Cacora, with snakes and crabs also found dead, raising concerns over possible chemical contamination near the garbage treatment plant.
Residents inspected the site on Saturday and raised concerns over the foul stench and its impact on aquatic life and the surrounding environment. Despite an earlier water sample report by the Goa State Pollution Control Board reportedly finding no pollution, the repeated incidents have triggered fresh concerns among locals.
“Every day, after midnight, a strong stench begins to linger. There is no problem during the daytime, but the plant releases gas at night, which is unbearable,” an affected resident said.
The nallah is also connected to Nanda Lake, a Ramsar-recognised wetland, raising concerns over the possible spread of contamination to the ecologically important water body.
Residents have demanded a fresh investigation, water testing and action to identify the cause of the repeated deaths of aquatic life.
