Retired top Goa police official Tony Fernandes has said that peace loving Goans are facing a serious threat from gangs moving around with dangerous weapons and has urged the Police to set up two squads to rein in the anti-social and criminal elements.
The retired Superintendent of Police has said the latest gang war is a testimony that law and order has totally collapsed in the city.
He feared that the Amendment to legalize illegal structures on Communidade and government land will provide permanent shelter to the anti-social elements operating in the state.
“Presently most of the criminal elements from outside the state are staying in illegal structures on Comunidade and government land. If these structures are legalized, they may become permanent residents of Goa”, he said.
Saying that the gang war incident should be a wakeup call for the police as well as the people of Goa, Tony said that people of Goa should think twice before leasing out their premises for migrants.
“There may be genuine workers coming to Goa for employment. But we have to be cautious since many criminal elements from states such as Bihar and Uttar Pradesh might have set up base in Goa”, he said.
