Goa witnessed heavy rainfall on Monday with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) upgrading its warning from a Yellow to an Orange alert.
The State recorded 19.1 mm single-day rainfall, contributing to a surplus of 45.9 per cent in overall precipitation since June 1.
The sudden surge in rainfall led to flood-like conditions in low-lying areas, particularly Sattari and Bicholim.
The IMD stated that increased rainfall activity over Goa is attributed to a depression over East Vidarbha and adjoining Telangana.
This depression, which has been moving west-northwestwards at a speed of 10 km/h, was centered near 19.8°N latitude and 79.5°E longitude as of 11:30 am on September 2. The IMD has forecasted that this system will continue moving west-northwestwards across Vidarbha and weaken into a well-marked low-pressure area over the next 12 hours.
