MAPUSA

The Mapusa Judicial Magistrate First Class on Wednesday remanded two Bangladeshi nationals to nine days of police custody in connection with the armed dacoity at the residence of Dr Mahendra Ghanekar in Ganeshpuri, Mapusa.

The accused, identified as Santosh Babu B (27) and Safikul Rohul Amir (37), both residents of Bengaluru, were formally arrested by Mapusa Police on Tuesday.

They were produced before the court on Wednesday afternoon, which granted the police nine days’ custody for further investigation.

The incident occurred on October 7, when a gang of armed robbers allegedly stormed into Dr Ghanekar’s bungalow, held the family hostage at knifepoint and looted valuables.

According to police sources, the arrested duo are relatives of some members of the dacoity gang and are suspected to have played a key role in facilitating the escape of the six robbers to Bangladesh following the crime.

Acting on technical and human intelligence, Goa Police tracked down and apprehended the suspects nearly a week after the incident.

A case has been registered under relevant Sections 331(3), 115(2), 351(3), 126(2), 310(2), 61(2), 111 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The investigation is being led by PSI Yashwant Mandrekar under the supervision of Mapusa PI Nikhil Palekar.
