MARGAO
The newly elected committee of the Margao New Market Traders Association led by Gopal Naik on Monday made a fervent plea to the Margao Municipal Council to expedite the construction of a multi-level parking plaza in the commercial capital.

The traders also appealed to the Margao civic body to complete work on the repairs of the market sheds before the onset of the monsoons.

Addressing the media on Monday after assuming office as the committee of the New Market Traders Association, Gopal said the traders have urged the MMC to expedite the multi-level parking project on a war footing to resolve parking issues plaguing the city, especially the market area.

“The New Market plays host to hundreds of small shops with the traders coming to the market on their vehicles, including two-wheelers. Since there is no proper parking, the business in the New Market has been affected. We have requested the MMC to build the multi-level parking project on topmost priority and resolve the issue of parking,” he said.

Referring to the massive fire on December 27 that engulfed the three shops in the new market area, Gopal said the new committee will follow up with the municipality and other authorities to expedite the construction of the overhead water tank and revive the defunct fire hydrants.

On the issue of the market sheds, Gopal said the new committee has been informed that the Margao Municipality will take up the repair work of the market sheds, exuding confidence that the repair of the sheds will be taken up and completed before the onset of monsoons.

The new committee also raised the issue of man-made traffic bottlenecks at the Pimpalkatta area which houses the fruit market. “We will write to the Margao police as well as the traffic police to clear the roadblocks from the Pimpalkatta road. If the roadblocks are not removed within 15 days, the market traders will remove the blocks from the road,” he warned.
