MLA slams govt over insensitivity towards stranded freedom fighters

MARGAO

Congress Working President MLA Yuri Alemao has said that distortion in history of Cunccolim revolt at 'Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav' exhibition and insensitivity towards stranded freedom fighters due to a breakdown of a KTC bus proceeding to Patradevi Martyrs Memorial has exposed the impudence of BJP government.

Reacting to the distortion of history on the display board at the exhibition organised by the State government, the Cuncolim MLA expressed complete agreement with the objection raised by the Chieftains Memorial Trust.

“I strongly condemn the unpardonable act of the government to keep the veteran freedom fighters who were proceeding to Patradevi stranded at Porvorim due to a breakdown of the KTC bus," Yuri said.

He added: “The publicity stunt of the BJP government titled "Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav" and "Har Ghar Tiranga" have in a way backfired on the party and exposed its disrespect towards the national flag and national anthem. It reminds me of the "India Shining" campaign of the then BJP government which eventually resulted in its defeat in 2004.”

He demanded that Chief Minister Pramod Sawant take action on all those responsible for the distortion of the history of the Cuncolim revolt. “Facts will always remain facts and the BJP government will never succeed in distorting history. I urge that government to check official records and not get carried away with narratives set by the right-wing political historians,” stated Yuri.

He added: “It is sad that the most insensitive BJP government could not provide proper transport to the freedom fighters whose sacrifice resulted in the liberation of Goa. What stopped the government from providing them with Innova cars or electric Kadamba buses? The insensitivity of the government stands exposed once again.”
