MLA slams govt's unpreparedness in handling fires

MARGAO

Aam Admi Party Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas on Thursday said the fire incidents across the state only exposed the government and the disaster management agencies of its unpreparedness in handling fires.

He also raised suspicion whether the fire at the Mhadei wild life sanctuary is a deliberate attempt to drive away the tigers from the wild life habitat.

“Are we prepared to fight fires of such magnitude? Was fire fighting part of the recent mock drill carried out by the disaster management agencies recently”, Venzy questioned, while demanding that the government should invest in logistics to put in place the right resources to meet fire emergencies.

Asserting that Goa is not prepared to meet such fire incidents, the Benaulim MLA said this is happening because there is a government which has no intention to meet any such emergency situation.

“We have no contingency plan. The district Collector has no plan. Those who have voted the BJP to power should know that this  government is not working for the people.  They are  not prepared for the emergencies”, he said, even as he called upon the people to bring about a change in government to bring about changes in the logistics.

While condemning the government for its lack of preparedness in fighting fires, the AAP MLA lamented that the government has sought to take shelter by taking the shelter of the heat wave.

Suspecting that the government does not want the Mhadei tiger reserve,  Venzy said the question that has come to the fore is whether the fire was ignited to drive away tigers from the Mhadei wild life sanctuary.
