MLA warns against Constitution rewrite

Calls for vigilance and unity on Ambedkar Jayanti

MAPUSA

Aldona MLA Adv Carlos Alvares Ferreira voiced concerns over alleged attempts to rewrite the Constitution of India.

Highlighting the struggles faced by Babasaheb Ambedkar in his early life and his monumental role in drafting the Constitution, Ferreira warned against jeopardizing the legacy and principles enshrined in it.

"He was fighting for equality and recognition. He laid the foundation for the Constitution of India. Today we are in danger, there are attempts to rewrite the Constitution. They want to wipe out his legacy. They want to change the country. They want to bring the dark days of the Hitler again. We must be united to save the principles of our founding fathers like Ambedkar to save the country,” Ferrira said while commemorating Ambedkar Jayanti, organized by the State Congress Party on Sunday.

State Congress President Amit Patkar, vice president Tulio D'Souza, state Congress general secretary Vijay Bhike, and other party members were also present.

Ferreira cautioned against potential repercussions, drawing parallels to dark historical periods and urging vigilance to preserve the country's foundational values.

Congress President Amit Patkar echoed Ferreira's sentiments, accusing the Modi government of infringing on people's rights and suppressing freedom of speech.

He urged for a united stance against divisive tactics and emphasized the significance of voting to safeguard the Constitution.

Meanwhile, Bhike reiterated the Congress party's commitment to protecting Goa's identity, culture, and heritage, positioning it as the sole alternative to defend these aspects amid growing concerns.
