MARGAO
While the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) diktat to discontinue operation of the 5TPD bio-methanation plant has come into force, the GSPCB’s direction to the Margao Municipal Council to install bio-digesters of sufficient capacity at the Sonsodo solid waste management facility has gone abegging.
Officials in the know explained that the GSPCB’s directions were to come into effect simultaneously, i.e. the Margao Municipal Council to shut the operation of the 5TPD plant within six months, but at the same time set up additional bio-digester plants of sufficient capacity at Sonsodo for the treatment of the city’s waste.
“If one interprets the GSPCB order, it is clear the Board directed the MMC to install additional bio-digester plants of sufficient capacity at Sonsodo site and discontinue the operation of the 5TPD bio-methanation plant," remarked a MMC official.
The official added: “It is apparent that the MMC has failed to take a call in the last six months on the question of setting up additional bio-digesters at Sonsodo to address the waste problem, knowing well that the 5TPD bio-methanation plant would be shut down after six months as per the GSPCB’s diktat”.
