MRF work on hold: Sarpanch

CANACONA

Khola Sarpanch Purna Nayak said the work to construct a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) for the village has been kept on hold following objections by some locals, but insisted that the allegations were not justified.

“The site behind the Panchyat Ghar is not new and dry waste has been collected and dumped there since 2012. Our panchayat body has only continued with this practice. The present panchayat only tried to construct a MRF shed and the site has also been approved by the government,” said Nayak.

“The high court gave coastal panchayats a period up to April to set up the MRF. We had obtained an extension and accordingly, issued the work-order.”

The sarpanch clarified that the MRF is only meant for collection of dry waste.

Nayak said the ward panch had never objected to the site and had expressed views in favour of the MRF.

“Allegations are being made that we are using Covid funds to construct the MRF, but the fact is funds are being used from the Finance Commission. The MRF shed with necessary compartments for segregated dry waste has been tendered for Rs 21 Lakh,” the sarpanch said.
