Rome was not built in a day: Kirti Azad on TMC poll failure

PANAJI

After being drubbed badly in the February 14 state assembly polls, Trinamool Congress Goa in-charge Kirti Azad on Tuesday said that the party would win the next assembly elections in Goa, explaining the party's failure with the classic idiom 'Rome was not built in a day".

Speaking to reporters Azad also commented on the exodus of leaders and workers from the Trinamool Congress, claiming the exits at least gave clarity as to who was really committed to the party and its ideals.

"I said Rome was not built in a day, but the TMC will form a government in the next five years, when the next assembly elections come," Azad told reporters in Panaji. Azad has been meeting top TMC officials in Goa to chart out a course of action for the future after the electoral drubbing in which the party failed to win a single seat in the state assembly polls.

Commenting on the consistent exodus of leaders from the party, including its state president Kiran Kandolkar, Azad said: "I wish them all the best for what they have done. At least we know who stand with us. Those who are going to be with us are not opportunists. Everything will be in place".

Azad also said that while the party did not win the polls, the TMC, he claimed had performed better than the Congress and the BJP during their early electoral forays in Goa.

"If you compare it to what the BJP did in the first three elections and the Congress did in the first four elections, you will find that we had done 800 times better than them. They did not even have a one per cent vote, we got 8.7 per cent," Azad said, while also dodging questions about whether the party would field candidates in the upcoming panchayat polls.
