MARGAO
The Shadow Council for Margao has demanded that the Margao Municipal Council concentrate on proper segregation of waste before thinking of incurring expenditure of crores of rupees on the treatment plants that may eventually turn into white elephant.
SCM convenor Savio Coutinho said as the Margao Municipal Council tries it’s best to keep their inefficiencies and shoddy schemes under wraps by restricting access of media and activists at Sonsodo, God has exposed them in various ways.
“Last fortnight, the fire incident exposed the Council over the piled up dry waste mountain, and today’s wall collapse has exposed the fraud of segregated waste collection which drains the Council to the extent of over Rs 30 lakh per month towards the payment of bills of private agency’s engaged for segregated waste collection,” he said.
Coutinho added: “We fail to believe that after having technically qualified people at the municipality, they choose to pile up the waste in the shed, attaining height of over 8-10 metres.”
He said the SCM has been consistently raising the issue of the accumulation of waste, without any further treatment whatsoever. “The Council very vocally claims that over 35 tonnes of wet waste is collected on daily basis, but miserably fails to explain why not a single kg of compost is produced from this so called “wet waste”, he said, adding ‘Now what we may get to hear from our representatives is that the double priced bio-methanation project has not become a reality on account of political reasons. But even if any number of plants and any type of technology is introduced at Sonsodo, will this type of mixed waste be appropriate to be fed into the treatment plants?’
