Participants attending a sensitisation session on dengue and other Vector Borne Diseases (VBD) have decided to make every effort to contain the spread and work towards closer coordination between panchayats and primary health centres in Mormugao taluka.
At a recent Mormugao Block meeting for VBD control chaired by Dy Collector Dattaraj Dessai, it was decided to hold a sensitisation session for sarpanchas and secretaries of the 10 panchayats to prepare an effective strategy to combat the spread of dengue.
In his inaugural address at rhe sensitisation session, Mormugao Taluka BDO Prasiddh Naik appealed to Panchayats will fully co-operate with the Directorate of Health Services (DHS) to contain the spread of dengue and other vector borne diseases.
Cortalim PHC Health Officer Dr Socorro Quadros made a presentation on how dengue was getting a foothold in the various villages of Mormugao taluka and the method of its spread.
He stressed on the need for community support and panchayat involvement in the fight against dengue.
Dr Kalpana Mahatme, State Incharge of the National Vector Borne Diseases Control Programme of DHS, explained the various strategies adopted all over the State through various health centres to combat the spread of dengue and malaria.
GOACAN Co-Ordinator Roland Martins explained the need for community support and intersectoral involvement in combating the spread of VBD.
He highlighted the role of various panchayat committees on garbage management, health, water, sanitation and biodiversity management and called on the panchayats to allocate GPDP funds to purchase equipment for VBD control.
He also called on panchayat members to visit construction sites, identify mosquito breeding sites, promote the issue of Health Cards, report abandoned houses and vehicles to the PHC and plan regular community cleanliness drives.
The participants interacted on ways to discuss Vector Borne Diseases during the fortnightly panchayat meetings, PHCs to share ward case statistics, getting various committees to mobilise support for combating VBD and increasing health education programmes in the next four months.
