Tragic Monday: Accidents continue to haunt Goans

56-year-old man killed in head-on crash at Mapusa

MAPUSA: A 56-year-old Siolim man was killed and another seriously injured in the head-on collision between two-wheelers in Mapusa on Monday.

The deceased has been identified as Darshan Semerpurushkar, a resident of Rai, Siolim.

Justin James (23), a resident of Kerala has suffered serious injuries and has been admitted in Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim.

James was reportedly on a study tour in the State.

According to police, the accident occurred at around 1 pm when James was proceeding from Mapusa Court to Housing Board while the deceased was moving in the opposite direction.

On reaching near the crematorium at Dattawadi, Mapusa, both met with a head-on collision and were flung off from their two-wheelers suffering serious injuries.

The deceased Darshan Semerpurushkar was shifted to North Goa District Hospital, Mapusa where he died while James has been shifted to the GMC.

Mapusa Police have registered an offence under section 279, 337, 338 and 304-A IPC for rash and negligent driving against Justin James.

Police are investigating further.


Mishap snuffs out life of 35-yr-old at Quelossim 
VASCO: A 35-year-old man was killed in a road mishap after his bike rammed an oncoming bus at Krupawaddo, Quelossim on Monday.

The deceased has been identified as Santosh Naik a resident of Datta Mandir, Adpai Ponda. 

According to police the accident took place at around 1.30 pm at Krupawaddo Quelosssim, when Naik who was riding a Jupiter bike rammed into an oncoming bus that was moving towards Thana Cortalim.

Naik who was grievously injured succumbed to his injuries as he was being shifted to Hospicio hospital.

Sources said the deceased was working as an attendant at the Goa Medical College and hospital, Bambolim.

Verna police Head Constable Babaji Matkar is carrying out further investigation under the supervision of Police Inspector Diago Gracias.


Miraculous escape for biker at Usgao
PANAJI: A 39-year-old bike rider had a miraculous escape after his two-wheeler collided with a container vehicle at Tisk, Usgao early Monday.

The injured has been identified as Ghanashyam Cuncolienkar from Taleigao.

According to information the accident occurred at 7 am near the MRF factory after Cuncolienkar’s bike reportedly skidded and got trapped between the wheels of a container vehicle that was proceeding to Usgao.

The accident was such that the bike was totally smashed.

Of late, accidents have been the order of the day near the MRF factory and locals have been repeatedly demanding closure of the accident prone U-turn for quite some time now.
