Will Hospicio district hospital get a Cardiology Department before 2027 Polls? The long-standing demand for a cardiology department at the South Goa District Hospital, Hospicio, has once again come into focus, with healthcare workers and citizens questioning whether the facility will become a reality before the 2027 Goa Assembly elections.
Health Minister Vishwajit Rane has repeatedly assured that a cardiology department would be established at the district hospital ahead of the Assembly polls scheduled for February 2027, raising expectations among patients and medical staff alike. However, hospital administrators maintain that while the promise remains, tangible progress on the cardiology front is yet to be seen.
There is, however, renewed optimism regarding the establishment of a trauma unit at the hospital. Officials said preparatory studies are currently underway, and the proposal has gained momentum in line with the Union government’s emphasis on setting up trauma care facilities at district hospitals across the country.
“We have already had a few meetings regarding the proposal to establish a trauma unit at the South Goa District Hospital. With the Union government’s budgetary estimates also stressing trauma units at district hospitals, we are hopeful this project will materialise in the coming months,” sources said.
While the cardiology department remains a key unmet demand, healthcare workers say the trauma unit would be an important step towards improving the hospital’s overall capacity and could pave the way for it to eventually evolve into a centre of excellence.
For now, patients and staff await concrete timelines, even as assurances continue ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
