Former MP, ex-minister and educationist Prof Gopal Rao Mayekar passed away late Thursday evening while undergoing treatment at the Goa Medical College, Bambolim.
He was 87.
A resident of Ganeshpuri, Mapusa, he is survived by his wife Usha Mayekar, three sons and a daughter.
According to his close family members, he was not keeping well and was undergoing treatment at the GMC.
He will be cremated on Friday at the Dattawadi crematorium in Mapusa.
A staunch Marathi protagonist, Prof Gopal Rao Mayekar was the first president of Gomantak Marathi Academy and also a member of the Advisory Board for Marathi.
He was a writer, teacher and social worker who contributed immensely towards the welfare of the State.
He was first elected to the Goa Legislative Assembly in March 1967 and was a cabinet minister in the late Dayanand Bandodkar government.
He was a minister for education, public health and public works.
He was also the former principal of Bandekar college of Commerce, Mapusa.
