PANAJI: This year, the Tourism Department will commemorate Shiv Jayanti with a large-scale cultural programme honouring Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on the 352nd anniversary of his historic coronation.
The celebrations begin on February 19 at 9.30 am at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk near IHM, Porvorim, with ceremonial garlanding of the statue followed by a traditional Dhol Tasha presentation.
As part of the tribute, the Department will stage a mega theatrical production titled Shiv Garjana on February 21 from 6 pm onwards at Shree Bodgeshwar Ground, Mapusa. The large-format play will feature over 150 artistes performing on a specially designed revolving stage, portraying the life, leadership, and historic association of Shivaji Maharaj with Gomantak. The evening will conclude with a special drone show.
Tourism Minister Rohan A Khaunte said Shiv Jayanti is a celebration of courage, foresight, and exemplary governance. "Through Shiv Garjana, the Department seeks to create a meaningful historical experience that connects people, particularly the younger generation, with the inspiring journey of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj," Khaunte said.
He said that such initiatives strengthen cultural tourism and reaffirm Goa’s commitment to showcasing its historical associations with pride and dignity.
Tourism Director Kedar Naik added that the programme has been curated to blend historical reverence with contemporary presentation, with an aim to offer a memorable and enriching experience for citizens and visitors alike.
The Department has invited the public to attend in large numbers and be part of the commemorative events. Entry is free and open to all.
