The Goa government has decided to set up a maritime board that will act as a dedicated platform to streamline policies and foster closer collaboration between industry and the State.
River Navigation Minister Subhash Phal Desai, while speaking at the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) conference on India’s Shipbuilding Roadmap Towards Maritime Amrit Kal Vision 2047 on Monday, stated that work was underway to establish the Goa Maritime Board.
“The much-needed institution will coordinate and accelerate shipbuilding and maritime activity in Goa. The Board will serve as a single platform to align policies, strengthen government “ industry engagement, promote maritime tourism, develop coastal infrastructure and support traditional fishing communities,” he said with Union Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Shantanu Thakur attending the inaugural session virtually.
Phal Desai further explained that the government’s vision is to help smaller enterprises and local communities, too.
“Our vision is for maritime development to benefit not just large industries but also small enterprises and local communities. We want Goa to emerge as a preferred destination for young Indians aspiring to a maritime career,” the minister added.
He stressed that the state government was committed to environmentally responsible growth. “Green ship design, low-emission fuels, waste reduction and sustainable coastal management will be essential,” he said.
Phal Desai further stated that the global shipping sector is under pressure to cut its carbon footprint with tougher international regulations on emissions and fuel standards. “Hence, we will prioritise green shipbuilding capabilities with zero-waste manufacturing processes in our shipyards,” he said.
