Buyao Theatres will be celebrating 'Goem Shahir Ulhas Buyao', a musical tribute honouring the life and legacy of Ulhas Buyao, the renowned Goan artist, activist, music composer, and singer, at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao, on Tuesday, March 4 at 6 pm.
Buyao Theatres President Sidhanath Buyao told the media that the programme will showcase the remarkable journey of Ulhas Buyao, who contributed immensely to the Goan cultural landscape. “The event will highlight his role as a lyricist, composer, singer, tiatrist, natakkar, and activist, and reflect upon his struggles, triumphs, and commitment to preserving Goan identity,” he said.
Sidhanath stated that the objective of the programme is to celebrate the multifaceted contributions of Ulhas Buyao to Goan culture and his pivotal role in the preservation and promotion of Konkani music, theatre, and art. “It will also serve to educate and inspire the younger generation about Goan heritage, the importance of cultural identity, and the legacy of 'Goem Shahir' Ulhas Buyao, a recipient of the State Art & Culture Award.”
The programme will commence with schoolchildren performing the iconic 'Deva Mhojea Deva', a prayer composed and sung by Ulhas Buyao, followed by a short video film on his life and works.
A special performance by Sidhanath Buyao, a recipient of the Goa Yuva Srujan Award, will feature a selection of lesser-known songs from the Opinion Poll era, along with other compositions by Ulhas Buyao, bringing to life the musical brilliance of this legendary artist.
The event will also witness the launch of Ulhas Buyao’s famous song, performed by 25 renowned Goan singers, including Remo Fernandes, Hema Sardesai, Varsha Usgaonkar, Sonia Shirsat, and others.
“This event will not only honour Ulhas Buyao's significant contributions to Goan culture but also provide an opportunity for the community to reflect on the struggles and triumphs of Goa's identity through the eyes of one of its most beloved artists. We seek the government's support to bring this important cultural event to life, ensuring that the legacy of 'Goem Shahir' Ulhas Buyao is celebrated for generations to come,” he added.
