The new barrage across the Chapora River at Sal, Bicholim, is now expected to be completed by December, Water Resources Minister Subhash Shirodkar announced on Wednesday.

This marks a revision from the earlier deadline of May.

“Sal barrage will be ready by December. I have made a personal commitment to complete it by then. While there may be a slight delay of two to three months, I strongly believe it should be completed by the end of this year,” Shirodkar stated.

The barrage, with an estimated cost of approximately Rs 300 crore, is designed to supply up to 250 million litres of water per day (MLD) once operational. Additionally, it is expected to play a crucial role in mitigating flooding in Sal and nearby areas during the monsoon season.

The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring timely completion of the project, which is seen as a major step in strengthening the region’s water infrastructure and flood management capabilities.
