Stabbing sparks fresh fears over crime spike in Margao

MARGAO
Even as citizens on Monday morning raised concern over the deteriorating state of affairs on the Margao station road, peace was shattered on the road when a person was stabbed in the evening.
The incident again highlighted the rising lawlessness on the Margao station road, including petty thefts and drunkards involved in anti-social activities.
The stabbing incident occurred on Monday evening when the unknown accused stabbed another person in the abdomen, reportedly with a knife, over a petty fight. The victim was rushed to the South Goa District Hospital from where he was shifted to the Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim, after his condition was stated to be critical.
While the Margao Police have initiated a probe into the incident and are waiting for the forensic team to visit the spot, local residents in particular and Madgavkars in general expressed concern over the deteriorating situation on the station road.
A resident told 'The Goan' that they are not used to petty fights, complaints of theft and drunkards swarming around the place after dusk. “This is happening because these anti-socials have no fear of the men-in-uniform. The police would conduct foot patrolling on the station road in times of any major incident but forget to even make their presence on the road once a day,” remarked a resident.
Incidentally, resident Vivek Naik had told The Goan earlier in the day that the situation on the station road is turning from bad to worse. “When we are taking a morning walk, we come across drunkards and anti-social elements lying on the roadside posing nuisance to the citizens. Our plea to clear the station road of the anti-social elements has fallen on deaf ears,” he lamented.
He added: “The station road is the city’s entry and exit point for visitors. They will only carry bitter memories of the city back home. Hope the authorities take cognisance and initiate action.”
