The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Goa Unit has taken strong objection to its own cabinet minister Govind Gaude for making remarks alleging corruption in the Tribal Welfare Department portfolio which is currently under Chief Minister Pramod Sawant. The party is now contemplating “appropriate action” against Gaude.

Gaude, while speaking at a government-organized Prerna Din function held by the Tribal Welfare Department on Sunday, alleged that certain officials were clearing contractors’ files only after accepting bribes. His statement triggered political ripples within the ruling camp and invited sharp criticism from top BJP leaders.

Goa Assembly Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar hit out at Gaude stating the matter could have been discussed with the CM rather than using a public platform first. “The matter should have been discussed before the CM or with the cabinet. Making such a statement without following the protocol is inappropriate,” the Speaker said.

Tawadkar added that statements questioning the relevance of the Tribal Welfare Department amount to showing disregard towards the tribal community. He termed the minister’s remarks as “absurd” and intended only to create controversy.

“After the UTTA movement, I became the Minister for Tribal Welfare. At that time, the department used to function from a bungalow in Altinho. I set up a proper office and introduced 25 schemes for tribals. Therefore, it is unfortunate when someone who also participated in the UTTA movement says there is no need for the department,” Tawadkar stated, taking a veiled dig at Gaude.

BJP State President Damu Naik also expressed displeasure over the minister’s comments. “BJP is a party of principles. If anyone has any issues, there is a proper forum to raise them. Getting up and speaking every time won’t do. This is not a mere warning but appropriate action will be taken soon,” Naik warned.

Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party took the opportunity demanding accountability from the government and alleging systematic corruption.
