PORVORIM

A 37-year-old resident of Socorro, Anand Patil, who was allegedly assaulted by four persons on June 18 near the Socorro Panchayat Garden, succumbed to his injuries at Goa Medical College (GMC), Bambolim, on Sunday morning. He had been undergoing treatment at the hospital for the past 10 days.

According to police, the incident took place on June 18 at around 5.00 p.m. near the garden close to the Socorro Panchayat in Porvorim. The accused, identified as Saurabh Narulkar of Socorro, along with three others, allegedly abused, threatened and brutally assaulted Anand Patil with fists and kicks, targeting his face, head and other parts of the body, causing grievous injuries.

In connection with the case, Porvorim Police arrested three accused — Pranav Krishnanath Borkar, Arjun Paryekar and Anish Prashant Borkar (21), all residents of Chimbel, North Goa. They were traced and arrested on June 21 at 8.37 pm. The fourth accused, Saurabh Narulkar, had been absconding.

Porvorim Police Inspector Tukaram Chavan said Anand Patil succumbed to his injuries at around 9.30 am on Sunday at GMC. His body will be handed over to his family after the post-mortem examination.

Inspector Chavan further stated that the absconding accused, Saurabh Narulkar, surrendered before Porvorim Police on Sunday morning. He will be produced before the Judicial Magistrate First Class on Monday for police remand.

Following Patil's death, the case, which was initially registered as an attempt to murder, has now been converted into a murder case, Inspector Chavan said.

Meanwhile, residents of Socorro expressed concern over what they described as a delay in the arrest of the main accused. They pointed to video clips circulating on social media, which allegedly show the victim lying helpless on the ground while the assailants continued to kick him mercilessly.

The residents have demanded an impartial and thorough investigation to establish who planned the attack and whether there was any larger conspiracy behind the assault on Anand Patil.
