In a major crackdown on ‘illegal fishing’, the Goa Fisheries Department on Wednesday seized 10 Maharashtra-registered trawlers off the Calangute coast in coordination with the Coastal Police for allegedly operating unlawfully in the State’s territorial waters.
Officials confirmed that around 10 trawlers registered in Maharashtra were intercepted near Calangute.
The department said the vessels were found fishing without authorisation in Goa’s waters, violating State regulations and maritime boundaries.
Fisheries Minister Nilkanth Halarnkar stated that the government is determined to curb illegal fishing practices that threaten local livelihoods and marine ecology.
“The action will continue, and strict measures will be taken against trawlers operating illegally, as per law,” Halarnkar asserted.
He emphasised that the department is working closely with enforcement agencies to monitor coastal activity and ensure compliance.
The seizures come amid growing concerns among local fishermen, who have repeatedly complained about out‑of‑State trawlers encroaching into Goa’s waters.
Fishermen argue that such incursions not only deplete marine resources but also undermine the earnings of traditional fishing communities.
Authorities have stepped up surveillance along the coastline, deploying patrol boats and strengthening coordination between the Fisheries Department and Coastal Police.
Officials noted that the recent operations were part of a sustained drive to protect Goa’s marine resources and safeguard the interests of local fishing communities.
The department has also warned that violators will face legal consequences, including fines and possible cancellation of licences.
“We are committed to protecting the rights of Goan fishermen and ensuring that our waters are not exploited by outsiders,” Halarnkar said.
Over last two months, 5 fishing trawlers from Karnataka were also similarly seized.
With the fishing season underway, the crackdown is expected to serve as a deterrent to trawlers attempting to operate illegally in Goa’s waters. The Fisheries Department has urged fishermen to report suspicious activity and assured them of swift action against offenders.
