For the past 100 days since the State’s first containment zone at Mangor was declared in the first week of June, the Mormugao police has been among the frontline warriors in the battle to maintain law and order as part of the fight against Covid.
While monitoring the boundaries within or outside at the containment zones, the police came face-to-face with an unseen enemy but performed their duties without fear round the clock.
So far, 36 of them have tested positive while performing on duty at the various containment zones in the taluka, the last of which were de-sealed on Wednesday evening.
When contacted, Mormugao DySP Raju Raut Desai confirmed that 36 police staff had tested positive and of the 22 personnel who had recovered, 13 of them had volunteered to donate their plasma.
"As the SDPO of Mormugao, I feel proud to state that the police peacefully and tactfully handled the containment zones for the last 100 days from June 2 till date.”
“The police handled seven containment zones with large populations, comprising Zuarinagar (18,000), Mangor Hill (12,000), Baina (9,000), New Vaddem (6,000), GRB colony Sada (6,000), Sada (5,000) and Kharewaddo (5,000)," said Desai.
“While performing their duties in the containment zones, a total of 36 police personal including a police inspector and a police sub-inspector of my sub-division tested positive for Covid and 22 personnel have recovered.”
“From the 22 personnel who recovered, 13 of them volunteered and took part in the plasma donation test during a recent screening camp at the Ravindra Bhavan in Baina. This is a great sign of social work and I am extremely proud of my staff," said DySP Desai.
DySP Desai also thanked the South Goa collector and deputy collector for providing police staff with meals and accommodation in hotels, to ensure that families of police personnel were at minimum risk of exposure to Covid.
"I also thank the police department for providing all logistic and other support such as PPE suits, face masks, face shields, sanitisers, gloves, raincoats and enclosures during monsoon,” added Desai.
