An estimated 10,000 meters will be replaced by digital meters as part of the digitisation of electricity meters initiated in Sattari taluka.
According to reports, the State government decided to change all meters in the state and replace them with digital meters and as part of this process, around 10,000 meters will be replaced in Sattari taluka.
When contacted, Electricity Department AE Saudagar said the work has been undertaken by a private agency in Sattari, beginning with Valpoi.
“On completion of the meter changing work in Valpoi municipal area, work will begin at the panchayat level,” Sadadagar said.
Many consumers from Sattari had complained of meter problems and since they could not afford to buy their own digital meters, they continued to receive power supply with faulty meters.
As a result, customers were billed for average units consumed, as opposed to actual units consumed, for a number of years, thereby causing a loss to the electricity department.
Despite demands for newer digital meters, the government had been earlier unable to provide it to the consumers.
But with the government deciding to provide digital meters, consumers will now get new meters to log the actual units consumed.
