After overcoming hurdles, 100-foot flag post was installed at the Joshi Chowk in front of the Vasco Railway Station on Thursday morning.
After being stalled for two days due to an anonymous complaint to Vasco police, work to erect the flag post began on Thursday and Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Councillor Krishna Salkar, MMC Councillors Rochana Girish Borkar, Murari Bandekar, Leo Rodrigues, Lavina Fernandes and former MMC chairperson Kritesh Gaonkar supervised the entire operation.
A crowd of over 500 onlookers had gathered to witness the installation of the huge flag post in Joshi Chowk outside the Vasco Railway station.
When the flag was hoisted, the crowd excited and many collectively began shouting slogans like “Vande Mataram” and “Bharat Mata Ki Jai”.
Sources said that the Automated Flag Post will be inaugurated on Sunday just in time for the 70th Republic day celebrations.
The majestic flag pole is visible from almost every part of the city. Trials of hoisting the flag were on till Thursday evening. Many people were seen saluting the national flag with some even clicking selfies as the flag was being hoisted.
When contacted, MMC Councillor Krishna Salkar said it was a red-letter day for Vasco with the installation of the 100-foot flag pole.
“The surrounding area of the flag post will also be beautified. I thank railway authorities for having approved this proposal,” said Salkar.
Former MMC chairperson Kritesh Gaonkar said the national flag initiative would ignite patriotic fervour in the minds of the people every time they saw the tricolour.
