About 122 large trees located on both sides of the road are likely to be cut as part as the process to widen the approximately 2-km Honda Tisk to Vadakade road in Honda Panchayat area has begun.
Measurement work for the road widening has been initiated by authorities, along with an inspection of the trees falling within the proposed widening limits.
Many of the trees along this road are old and large. During summer, these trees provide shade to pedestrians as well as motorists. The possibility of extensive tree cutting has, therefore, raised concerns among local residents and environmentalists.
The impact of the proposed road widening may not be limited to the trees. Some shops, houses and compounds located along the roadside may also fall within the proposed widening limits. Electricity poles along the road may also have to be relocated.
Residents have demanded that authorities consult with the affected property owners before undertaking the widening work and take their objections and suggestions into consideration.
According to local residents, there is no opposition to improving the road considering the need for better traffic movement.
However, instead of widening the entire stretch substantially, they have suggested examining the possibility of carrying out limited widening only at locations where the road is narrow. They have also urged authorities to preserve existing trees wherever possible while developing the road.
Residents claimed that even if new saplings are planted after cutting down large trees, it would take several years for them to grow large enough to provide adequate shade. They stressed that environmental protection must go hand in hand with development, and that an alternative plan should be considered to minimise tree cutting.
Residents have demanded that before taking a final decision on the road widening, authorities should consider traffic requirements, available space, importance of the existing trees and the impact on private properties.
