A 12-year-old girl lost her life in a tragic hit-and-run accident near Peddem junction on National Highway 66 late Tuesday evening.
The incident occurred around 7.45 pm while the victim was playing with two friends on the service road adjacent to the highway.
According to preliminary reports, she inadvertently stepped onto the main road and was struck by a speeding motorcycle.
The girl was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, but despite efforts by medical personnel, she succumbed to her injuries.
Mapusa police have launched an investigation into the incident and are actively working to identify the motorcyclist involved.
Authorities are reviewing surveillance footage from the area and appealing to witnesses to come forward with any information that may aid in the investigation.

This is the first fatal accident that has occurred at the Peddem junction on the NH-66. The junction is an accident prone zone and several mishaps have occurred at the junction which criss crosses several roads. The administration has also installed traffic lights at the junction to manage the traffic flow in the area.
