The traffic department revealed that 1,358 drivers were randomly checked for drunken driving all over the State between 7 pm to 1 am.
The department had, earlier last week, issued notices to traffic cells and police stations across the State regarding the special drive against drunken driving. The cases were registered under Section 185 (Drunken Driving) of the MV Act 1988.
Based on availability of alcometers, police and traffic personnel conducted random checks on drivers of vehicles including trucks. Officials placed at strategic locations around the State conducted tests on 1,358 drivers. 161 of them were found to have blood alcohol concentration of more than 30mg/100 ml.
The department had undertaken the drive in response to the huge influx of tourists in the State in view of the summer vacations.
