A 19-year-old youth from Manipur was swept away by the rough seas off Candolim beach early Monday morning when he ventured into the rough, choppy sea, reportedly in an intoxicated state.
According to reports, the incident occurred before lifesavers began patrolling the beach at 7 am.
A group of four employees ” T Sapulau, two from Nagaland, and one from Mizoram ” from a hotel at Gaurawada-Calangute had gone to the beach near Candolim.
As soon as he reached the shore, Sapulau was reportedly under the influence of alcohol and had entered the water despite his friends’ cautions not to enter the sea.
While he was in the sea, a large wave came and swept him away. On noticing him disappear into the water, his friends alerted their hotel manager, who rushed to the scene.
After about half an hour, Sapulau was found floating unconscious in the sea. His friends brought him ashore and took him to Candolim Primary Health Centre in a 108 ambulance, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
On receiving information about the incident, lifeguards, tourist police and Calangute police visited the spot. Calangute Police Inspector Snehal Malik conducted a panchnama and sent the body for an autopsy to the GMC hospital.
The police have contacted the family of the deceased and are conducting further investigations.
Sources said Sapulau had been working at the hotel in Gaurawada-Calangute for a month and, before that, had been working in a hotel in Porvorim.
