The first edition of Goy Olympia 2017 will be held from January 4-8 at Peddem Sports Complex, Mapusa.
Addressing the media at the Art & Culture Conference Hall here on Friday, Event Curator Varad Karmali revealed that the event is conceptualized on the lines of Olympics.
“We are doing a sports event which is like mini Olympics except wherein a few disciplines like hockey, volleyball and football are excluded,” Karmali disclosed.
“The event which commences on January 4 at 6 pm at Peddem Sports Complex, Mapusa will only have the participation of all the colleges at the parade on the opening day, while the closing ceremony will be held in the evening of January 8,” he added.
“The 21-discipline event will have the participation of both the male and female categories in both the events. There will be weight categories for certain sports like judo, boxing as well. While individual competitions would be held in sports like badminton, chess and carrom, team competitions would include traditional Indian sports like kabbadi and tug-of-war,” the event curator further stressed.
Following the Curator’s introduction to the novel students’ event, video footage of the festival was shown to the gathering.
It was ambitiously revealed that the event is trying to host the biggest marathon in Goa with at least 2000 participants expected to participate.
Rahul Kamat, Goy Olympia President who started the unique Saunstha Goy an abbreviated form of ‘Gang Of Youngsters,’ began by reasoning out why the word ‘Gang’ mentioned in his organization. “We want to erase the negative feelings by bringing up good deeds. We founded our organization in 2013 and a year later it was registered. From that time onwards our main motive was to help the underprivileged. We have given admissions, provided books. In the first year, 35 students were adopted studying in Class X. Now we are paying fees amounting to Rs. 21000 per year of CA students,” the enterprising Kamat stated. Talking further, the Goy Olympia President stated that professors do not provide much support to students in sports rather telling them to focus on academics. As such, a gold-medallist shooter like Shobha Shoni from Shantadurga HSS, Bicholim has not received the necessary support despite her proven talent.
With a bigger picture in mind, Kamat stated that this event will not restrict itself to the State itself but would look forward to take it to the national level with the college students’ support. The event will have attractive individual prizes and spot prizes for the spectators on the ground.
Event host Rajkumari Bhatkar, Goy Olympia Treasurer Vibhuti Kamat, South Goa Coordinator Meghavi Pangam were also present.
