MARGAO

The two labourers from Jharkhand who were held guilty in the murder of Edison Sorang at Raia, have been sentenced to undergo imprisonment for life by the South Goa Sessions Court.

Additional Session Judge Sudhir Shirgaonkar had earlier convicted the two accused Pradeep Dungdung and Anand Xaxa under section 302 of the Indian Penal code for murder.

Considering the number of injuries inflicted on the deceased which is an aggravating circumstance, the Judge held that the offence is definitely cruel. “The manner in which it is committed is definitely grave and no leniency should be shown to the accused and therefore maximum sentence of life imprisonment should be imposed. This is not a rarest of rare case and it is also not the argument of the prosecution”, the Judge said.

Referring to the argument advanced by Public Prosecutor U Avde that the deceased had suffered 22 injuries, the Judge said, “this Court has recorded the order of conviction by recording the reasons, inter alia, that the deceased had suffered injuries on his head. The manner in which young person of 21 years of age was killed, it cannot be said that nature of offence is not severe. The manner in which the offence is committed is definitely serious. The incident erupted over the remark passed on the girlfriend of the deceased”.

While pleading for imposition of maximum sentence to act as a deterrent, the Public Prosecutor had submitted that the deceased has suffered 22 injuries and the deceased was just 21 years of age.
