2 houses built on land meant for Mopa demolished

Acting on orders of North Goa Collector Nila Mohanan, two houses illegally built on property acquired for the Mopa airport were demolished under the guidance of Pernem Mamlatdar Ishan Sawant and Pernem Deputy Collector Sudhir Kerkar at Varkhand.
According to sources, two persons had built their houses in Survey Nos 116 and 114 on the proposed Mopa airport land at Varkhand, after the land was acquired by the government. Terming these houses as having encroached on government land, Collector North Mohanan on Wednesday issued an order to demolish these houses through the land acquisition department.
When the demolition squad reached the spot, they found that one house was locked. Without wasting any time, the squad went ahead with the demolition. A police force was present at the site to prevent any untoward incident.
Pernem Mamlatdar Sawant, Deputy Collector Sudhir Kerkar, Varkahnd panchayat talathi and a Civil Aviation officer were present during the demolition drive. The demolition drive started at 4 pm.
Speaking to reporters, Deputy Collector Sudhir Kerkar said the land acquired by the government becomes government land and it is illegal to build houses on it.
"We have just followed orders and we have not created problems for anyone,"
he said.
