Two houses were damaged after a Peepal tree came crashing down at Agassaim on Monday morning.

While the house of Suraj Rama Naik was occupied, the house of Gurunath Pai was not occupied at the time of the incident at around 7.20 am.

Luckily, nobody was injured and locals informed that just before the tree fall, a school bus full of students had passed by that side.

Speaking to The Goan, Suraj Naik said one side of the roof of his house was totally damaged while all the walls have developed cracks.

“Due to the extensive damage, it is unsafe to reside in the house and temporarily we have been given shelter in a government school,” Naik informed while adding that the loss incurred is around Rs 9 lakh.

As for the house of Pai, there is also extensive damage to the roof as well as the walls and the loss incurred is around Rs 5 lakh.

On learning of the incident, Old Goa fire personnel reached the site and began operations to clear the tree.

However, since the tree was very big, the operation continued till late evening.

St Andre MLA Viresh Borkar visited the spot and assured that he would try to get maximum compensation for the two families under the Disaster Management.

“However, the approval of the compensation takes time as it is a lengthy process,” Borkar said and demanded that the process should be shortened so that the affected families get compensation within 15 days.
