Two members of a family from Netravali-Sanguem were injured after their van rammed into an electricity pole at Sulcorna village, while trying to avoid a bison which was reportedly crossing the road.
While Babuso Gaonkar who was on the wheels suffered minor injuries and was soon discharged, his wife Nayani Goankar suffered head injuries and is reportedly under treatment at District Hospital in Margao.
The incident took place as the couple and their daughter were returning home after visiting relatives at Ponda.
When Babuso reached Sulcorna, he suddenly saw a herd of bison crossing the road. In an effort to avoid hitting the bison, Babuso lost the control of the vehicle which rammed into a roadside electricity pole.
Immediately after the accident, their daughter called 108 and got her parents shifted to the hospital for timely medical care.
Incidentally, accidents involving wild animals on the Rivona-Netravali road is on the rise in the recent past. Over a month ago, a youth from Netravali lost his life after he hit his motorcycle against a bison at Rivona.
A few weeks ago, a leopard attacked three vehicles at Sulcorna, causing injuries to two persons. The leopard was subsequently trapped by the forest department.
The increasing sightings of wild animals crossing the road have caused concern among locals, particularly those who have to return home late night. They have appealed to the forest department to come up with some preventive measures before further mishaps take place in the village.
