Says locals working on contract for years
RGP MLA Viresh Borkar listens to the grievances of the employees of Madkai industrial estate, on Tuesday.
OLD GOA
RGP MLA Viresh Borkar visited the Madkai Industrial Estate on Tuesday, to understand the issues faced by employees who have alleged harassment by their employers.
After listening to the grievances, MLA Borkar assured that he would take up the issue with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant so that justice is served to the Goan employees.
Speaking to The Goan, MLA Borkar said the locals had informed that they are employed on contract basis for years, without any hope of regularisation.
“Every year, their contract is renewed without any hike in the salary. This is done deliberately by the employers so that the locals leave the job and they could employ outsiders,” Borkar stated.
Further, the MLA informed that the locals are asked for experience while applying for jobs but the candidates from outside Goa are given jobs without any experience.
“The locals also informed that the 80 percent local employees clause is not met by the industries, with majority outsiders being employed,” Borkar stated.
“Another issue that was brought to my knowledge was about the setting up of canteens and other services within the industrial estate, where the local Goans are deprived while outsiders are preferred,” Borkar said.
The MLA then stated that he has already spoken to the CM about the issues and that he has been asked to submit the list of employees who are constantly employed on contract.
“Our party will submit a memorandum to the CM with the list of the affected employees as well as demand that running of canteen and other services be given only to the locals,” Borkar informed.
“The CM has also informed me that he would hold a meeting with the Labour Commissioner on the issue,” Borkar stated.
