Two students at an ITI in Sada-Vasco took ill after allegedly consuming an adulterated soft drink and were admitted at the Sub district hospital in Chicalim.

Sources said the soft drink had reportedly contained pieces of camphor and naphthalene balls.

“The soft drink was offered to students by another student and it is unclear if the bottle already had pieces of naphthalene inside it or if it was a prank being played by the other student.”

“The boys who consumed the drink had complained of some smell in the bottle but drank the soft drink. One boy later vomited outside the ITI, while the other boy collapsed on the floor. The matter was reported to school officials and the boys were rushed to the Chicalim Sub District hospital,” said the source.

Meanwhile, sources at the Harbour police station said the boy who had offered the soft drink to the two students has been summoned to the police station for a detailed enquiry.

Police are also trying to ascertain if the soft drink had been contaminated before being opened or if it was contaminated by the student who had offered the soft drink.

When contacted, a doctor at the Chicalim SDH confirmed the incident and said both students have been admitted in hospital, but said they are out of danger.

“Both patients are out of danger and the police will enquire about the presence of substance in the soft drinks.”

“We have inserted tubes in their bodies and if something is picked up in the tubes, it can be analysed, but if it is already absorbed in their system it may be difficult to get the substance allegedly found inside the drink.”

“We have handed over the soft drink bottle to the police who can check with Food and Drugs Administration for adulteration. They can pick up soft drink bottles from the same shop to check if the entire lot was contaminated or if the substance was placed inside only one bottle,” said the doctor.
