MAPUSA
Within 24-hours, illegal huts have resurfaced at the proposed new Mapusa bus-stand after the Mapusa Municipal Council had demolished around 20 makeshift sheds in the area on Tuesday.
At least six huts made of tin sheets have been erected at the same site by the migrants who have encroached on the government land.
According to Shekar Naik, who has been raising several issues affecting Mapusa, the action of migrants indicates that they do not fear the law enforcing authorities.
He said he has informed the chief officer and the municipal inspector about the resurfacing of the huts.
“If the authorities want to keep these migrants away, the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) will have to station at least one staff at the site on a daily basis at least for a month,” Naik said.
The MMC had demolished around 20 huts which had encroached at the proposed bus stand site on Tuesday.
Naik, who had highlighted the encroachment by the migrants on social media was confronted and threatened by one of the migrants.
Based on Naik’s complaint, police had arrested the migrant while the civic staff demolished the encroachments under police protection.
Two handcarts found operating near the new bus stand site were also removed by the MMC staff.
