Health officials have recommended converting the military camp, Dicarpale into a containment zone after 24 personnel had tested positive for coronavirus in the last two days.
While around 19 military personnel had tested positive for Covid on Wednesday, another five have tested positive on Thursday.
While the personnel infected with the coronavirus have been shifted to the military hospital at Panaji, health officials have suggested to the district authorities to declare the affected camp as a containment zone to ensure that the virus does not spread to the adjoining residential locality.
Director of Health Services, Dr Ira Almeida said that the local health officials had suggested to the administration to take necessary steps to declare the camp into a containment zone. “Today, another five cases have been detected inside the camp, taking the total number of Covid cases at the military camp to 24. We are closely monitoring the situation at the military camp,” she said.
The Health Director pointed out that the health officials will again conduct testing of the personnel after a gap of some days.
Additional Collector, South Surendra Naik said though the administration had received a suggestion from the health officials to declare the military zone into a containment zone, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) is closely monitoring the situation at the camp.
Meanwhile, the total number of cases reported at the Margao Urban Health Centre has touched 58 in the last 24 hours.
Meanwhile, SDM, Margao Prasad Volvoikar told The Goan that the military camp has not been declared as a containment zone since the military personnel do not come in contact with the civilians.
He, however, said that the camp incharge has been asked to get the personnel, who had come in contact with the infected personnel, tested for coronavirus.
