PANAJI
Two-term MLA from Vasco, Carlos Almeida, who had resigned as a legislator and from the primary membership of the ruling BJP on Tuesday, joined the Congress on Wednesday along with his supporters.
The induction of Almeida was held at the Congress headquarters in Panaji in the presence of Opposition Leader Digambar Kamat, AICC Goa desk in-charge Dinesh Gundu Rao, GPCC president Girish Chodankar and other party leaders.
Some councillors of the Mormugao Municipality, owing allegiance to Almeida also joined the Congress with him.
Almeida told the media that his decision to join Congress was taken after discussing the issue with his supporters.
BJP had recently admitted Almeida's rival in Vasco, Krishna alias Daji Salkar and the party leadership had given ample indication that the latter will be nominated to contest the port town seat.
Almeida, after days of airing his angst at the party admitting Salkar, finally submitted his resignation as MLA and also as a primary member of BJP on Tuesday and followed it up by joining Congress on Wednesday.
