Three residents of Canacona, who had ordered for online combo pack of power bank and pen drive, were in for a rude shock when they received neatly packed dough filled in power bank case and dummy pen drive.
After duped in first online ordered delivery, in a calculated plan ordered two more online offered combo packs in two different names by a online goods supplier. Once the delivery boy of the delivery company went to deliver the consignment, he was taken to Canacona police station and forced to open
the consignment in the presence of police officials, exposing the fake goods.
It all began when Prajyot Dhuri on noticing an attractive combo offer of a power bank and pen drive for just Rs 1,099 on an online shopping website ordered it with cash on delivery facility.
"The delivery boy came, took payment and left. When I opened the neatly packed package, I noticed it contained somewhat duplicate looking goods. Still I kept the power bank for charging, but inspite of keeping it plugged for 2 hours, nothing happened," Dhuri told the police.
"I got suspicious and when I opened it, I saw dough, somewhat clay looking material inside. The pen drive was also a duplicate one. I informed my relatives and we decided to order afresh and catch them redhanded," added Dhuri.
Two days later, the delivery boy brought the ordered parcels in different names and he was taken to the police station only to find same fake consignment opened in front of his eyes.
"The delivery boy called up his manager, who reportedly took in defence that their company only delivers consignments and has nothing to do with the contents," said Dhuri.
Congress party secretary Janardhan Bhandari, who also questioned the boy before he was taken to the police, however refused to buy the explanation and equally sought to blame the online goods website and courier services and called for stern action.
"We demand strong action against the goods delivery company for delivering fake consignments. No doubt government agencies should find the roots of these online companies cheating innocent people. What if these companies deliver drugs, smuggled gold and explosives," questioned the secretary.
Canacona Police registered a case under Section 420 read with 34-IPC against the manager of courier service and operators of online goods supplier website for supplying fake goods consignment.
PSI Damodar Shirodkar is investigating the case under the supervision of Canacona PI Rajendra Prabhudessai.
