When the going gets tough, the tough get going.In a novel move which has earned widespread appreciation, three teachers from a school in Canacona have been travelling as far as 96 kms to and fro, to conduct classes for students who have been deprived of internet facilities in Netravali-Sanguem.
The teachers at Shree Balram Residential High School, Canacona, have been providing classes to 35 students of the school, who hail from Netravali village, about 30 kms away.
When contacted, Nertavali Sarpanch Archana Gaonkar said the efforts of the three teachers and the school headmistress, Savita Tawadkar, has been highly appreciated by the parents and public at large in Netravali village.According to the sarpanch, Netravali village has been facing poor internet connectivity and some parents cannot afford to buy costly mobile phones.
“The teachers, Damodar Velip, Madhukar Velip and Sanjay Gaonkar, visit Netravali village twice a week and besides conducting classes in Maths and Science, they also distribute notes, worksheets and assignments to students prepared by other subject teachers.”
“Moreover, the three teachers then proceed to Verlem-Salgini area, about 18 kms away from Netravali village, where another three students reside and conduct classes there.”
The sarpanch admitted that the three teachers have had a tough time reaching Verlem-Salgini to cater to the three students, due to the bad condition of the road.
“Had it not been for the efforts of the three teachers, students hailing from Netravali village would surely have missed their classes,” acknowledged a grateful sarpanch.“The teachers are very humble and take keen interest in teaching the students, despite all hardship and trouble they have to face in reaching the village,” said the sarpanch.
The students and their parents have also been grateful to the teachers for their efforts to conduct classes at the doorstep of students.During the classes, the teachers make it a point to ensure that students follow social distancing and wear mask at all times.
